Cumpăna – Culture, Landscape and Places of Remembrance

On Saturday, 20 June 2026, the municipality of Cumpăna hosted the 16th edition of the multicultural event „ConvieÈ›uire Interetnică pe Plaiuri Dobrogene“, where visitors could learn about the traditions of multicultural Dobrudja. The event included a traditional parade of folk costumes and the „Hora Prieteniei Etniilor Dobrogene“ at the Cumpăna Civic Centre. A traditional cooking competition allowed the participating communities to present typical dishes passed down through generations and preserved as part of the cultural heritage of their respective ethnic group. For a visit, the programme items can be organised around two main focuses: the parade and Hora on the one hand, and the cooking competition and traditional dishes on the other. At the Festivalul Șuberecului, Șuberek, a traditional Turkish dish and symbol of coexistence, took centre stage in local and interethnic cuisine.

Geographical setting

Cumpăna lies on a watershed at an average elevation of about 62 metres. The relief of the Cumpăna area forms a plateau: the Topraisar Plateau. The Topraisar Plateau has the character of a gently rolling plain cut through by narrow, dry valleys; their general drainage direction runs from west to east. A small spring rises east of the village and flows through a narrow valley called Derea. You can consider the different scales—watershed, plateau, valleys and spring valley—separately if you do not want to reduce the landscape to a single landform. The Constanța–Negru Vodă national road is the access route to Cumpăna. For travel planning, the road connection can be considered independently of the landscape features.

Culture

The Muzeul Satului is furnished as a traditional farmhouse with a kitchen, living room and bedroom, and displays authentic folk costumes. It has a century-old wedding chest dating from 1912. The museum includes a prayer and contemplation corner with four old icons and a silver oil lamp beneath a hand-embroidered cloth in traditional colours. For viewing the museum, the rooms of the house, the costumes and the prayer corner can be considered as three distinct themes.

Culture and Remembrance

The monument to those who fell in the Second World War was inaugurated on 23 August 1975 and lists the names of 23 fallen heroes. The monument to those who fell in the First World War in Cumpăna was erected in 1919 in memory of the local soldiers who died in the campaign from 1916 to 1918. The „Adormirea Maicii Domnului“ Church was built between 1924 and 1928. The „Cuvioasa Parascheva“ Church was consecrated on 14 October 2001. As part of Via DobroGetica, a milestone is to be erected in the park in front of the Cumpăna Cultural Centre, incorporating Cumpăna into the cultural route dedicated to the history, values and identity of Dobrudja.
