Industrial history

The Covasna–Comandău narrow-gauge forest railway was connected to Covasna railway station in 1892. It had a track gauge of 760 millimetres and formerly transported wood from the Comandău area to Covasna. The surviving sections of the forest railway between Comandău and Valea Zânelor are used for tourism today. The remains of a funicular railway are visible on Mount Sisak; they are regarded as evidence of the area’s industrial history. Remains of a former railway built to transport logs are also visible in the vicinity of Comandău. The Planul Înclinat was inaugurated in 1890 as a fully ecological facility operated by gravity. It is 1,236 metres long and has an elevation difference of 327 metres.

History

Micul Castel was built in 1890 as a residence for the director of the centre and is a historic monument. Since December 2006, it has housed the village museum of Comandău, with exhibitions on local history and the natural sciences. A commemorative plaque on the wall of the former office recalls the workers’ strike in Comandău in 1936. Remains of a former customs office are still visible in the former border settlement of Comandău. A monument to the heroes of the 1848–1849 Revolution stands in Comandău’s central park; a monument to those who fell in the First World War also stands there.

There is a ski slope on Mount Laur near Comandău. The route from Comandău to Vârful Lăcăuți initially follows the forest railway for 1.9 kilometres and then crosses the riverbed of the Bâsca Mare.
