Discover Zăbala: Culture, Nature and Trails

Zăbala presents cultural history in an unusually tangible form: the first permanent exhibition of the Csángó Ethnographic Museum, entitled “The Traditional Folk Art of the Moldavian Csángós”, opened on September 14, 2003.

Culture

The Csángó Ethnographic Museum in Zăbala houses furniture, ceramics, textiles, traditional costumes and tools. These collections are associated with Csángó, Szekler, Romanian, Saxon and Roma communities.

The fortified Reformed Church in Zăbala is a characteristic example of 15th-century Transylvanian Late Gothic architecture.

Nature and Trails

A guided hike offered by Zabola Estate leads through shaded paths, open meadows and the grounds around the New Castle.

The hiking trails of Zabola Estate pass through meadows and forests, where visitors may encounter deer, wild boar, squirrels and numerous birds.

The Zăbala–Vârful Valoşul Mic–Pava hiking trail begins in the center of Zăbala, near the Reformed Church.

On the grounds of Mikes Castle, it meets another marked hiking trail beside a pavilion. At Culmea Utvaloş (Capolna), it reaches another marked hiking trail, which it meets there.

For choosing your own route, the sections mentioned can be read according to their landmarks: the start in the town center near the Reformed Church marks the beginning of the trail, the pavilion on the grounds of Mikes Castle marks another meeting point, and Culmea Utvaloş (Capolna) marks an additional one. Together with shaded paths, open meadows, and meadow and forest areas, the route and landscape remain visible as separate features; this makes it possible to clearly assign the information to the individual trail sections.

Zăbala can be reached by train and by road.

Events

At the Sintilia celebration of the residents of Zăbala, participants in traditional costumes dance at wayside crosses as they make their way to the meadow where the cultural event takes place.

As part of the Sintilia event, Caș and Urdă were made on site from freshly milked sheep’s milk and offered for tasting.
