Călugăreni on the Neajlov: History, Churches and River Landscape

The bridge over the Neajlov in Călugăreni was rebuilt in 1934–1935 to commemorate the victory over the Turks. The Crucea lui Mihai is a more recent memorial: it was erected in 1993 on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Mihai Viteazul’s accession to the throne in Wallachia. The two dates refer to different historical points of reference.

Culture

Călugăreni’s historic monuments include the Biserica Adormirii Maicii Domnului, which is dated to 1866. The Conacul Varthiadi is dated to the 20th century and adds another period to the series of historic buildings. The former school building now serves as a museum and is dated to the 19th century. The combination of a religious building, manor house and former school building makes the historic sites legible in terms of their different functions.

The cemetery with stone crosses in the churchyard of Călugăreni’s wooden church is also dated to the 18th to 19th centuries. There is also a bronze bas-relief on the Neajlov, dated to the mid-20th century. Those wishing to organize the sites by building, memorial and chronological classification can consider these features separately rather than deriving a single era from them.

The Schitul Delta Neajlovului is an ensemble consisting of a wooden church and several outbuildings on the banks of the Neajlov. When planning your day, you can consider this site as an ensemble rather than focusing on just one building. A weekly market is also held in Călugăreni.

The different dates make it possible to draw comparisons across several centuries. For your personal planning, you can use the chronological classifications as a common thread and arrange the sites according to your preferred focus.

Nature

The municipality of Călugăreni is located in the area where the Câlniștea flows into the Neajlov. The Comana–Călugăreni forest zone offers opportunities for tourism, recreation and leisure. The river confluence and forest zone can be taken into account in your own planning as two differently named landscape references. This allows you to focus your days on water- or forest-related themes.

Geographical Location

National road DN5 runs through the municipality of Călugăreni and connects Giurgiu with Bucharest. For your personal planning, you can weigh transport connections and landscape separately.

When comparing hotels in Călugăreni, you can review the travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions side by side. For travel planning, these offer details can be compared separately with your own plans; history, water and forest provide three different ways of organizing the themes. When planning accommodation in Călugăreni, you can weigh the travel date, room category and cancellation conditions independently of one another: the travel date describes the desired period, the room category the preferred type of offer, and the cancellation conditions the financial and organizational flexibility. This makes it possible to compare different priorities side by side when planning cultural and nature-related activities around the Neajlov and the historic sites.
