Comana: Nature, Water and Monastic History

Parcul Natural Comana is a nature reserve of national interest covering an area of 25,000 hectares. Under the Ramsar Convention, it is recognized as a wetland of international importance. The park is also part of the Natura 2000 network; it is designated both as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and as a Site of Community Importance (SCI). These designations represent different formal classifications; therefore, using a single designation would give an incomplete account of the park's status.

Nature and Water

Balta Comana covers 1,206.4 hectares, of which around 400 hectares are permanently covered by water. This figure describes the permanently water-covered portion within the total area and should not be interpreted as an additional area when making your own assessment.

History and Remembrance

Mănăstirea Comana is included on Romania's list of historical monuments. It was founded in 1461 by Vlad Țepeș as a fortified monastery. In 1588, Radu Șerban began construction of a new monastery in Comana, Mănăstirea Comana. The years 1461 and 1588 refer to different founding and construction phases of the monastery.

The Mausoleum of the Heroes of Comana was built in 1932 within the medieval fortress and on the grounds of the Mănăstirea Comana monastery. The Comana memorial cemetery contains the graves of 516 unidentified heroes of various nationalities, including Romanians, Germans, Bulgarians and Turks.

Casa memorială Gellu Naum is the poet's summer house. It has been preserved as it was when Gellu Naum spent his summers there.

Activities

Parcul de aventura Comana has six courses for children and three courses for adults, with increasing levels of difficulty. The park also features a treetop cascade consisting of ten zip lines. In addition, there is a 130-metre-long zip line over the lake. The information on target group, difficulty level and length allows you to compare the options directly before planning individual activities.

Opening Hours

The protected Parcul Natural Comana is open to visitors around the clock, including on public holidays. The Moara de hârtie–Satul meșteșugurilor complex is scheduled to be open to visitors on weekends from April to October. The two time references apply to different facilities and should be considered separately when making your own plans.
