Malu: Cama-Dinu-Păsărica Nature Reserve and Local History
The 2,400-hectare Cama-Dinu-Păsărica Nature Reserve also includes the village of Malu. For your planning, you can consider nature, waterways and local history as separate topics.
Nature and River Landscape
The area includes oak, ash and elm forests, gallery-like willow and poplar forests, as well as wet depressions with water lilies and reeds. When preparing, you can assess these different habitat types separately rather than combining them into a generalized landscape picture.
The area also includes the islands of Cama, Dinu and Păsărica, as well as the floodable area between the dyke and the riverbank. For your planning, you can consider these spatial relationships separately. The Cama-Dinu secondary channel lies opposite Malu and has calmer water.
When comparing waterways according to different characteristics, you can consider the water position, riverbank area and depth profile individually. Along the Danube in this section, there are pronounced depth levels where the depth drops from 2–3 metres to 6–8 metres. Gura Canalului Cama is considered a fishing spot for predatory fish such as asp (Avat) and zander (Șalău), where the secondary channel flows into the main channel.
The landscape around Malu thus combines several clearly distinguishable areas: wooded areas, wet depressions, islands and the area between the dyke and the riverbank. It also includes different types of waterways, with a calmer secondary channel, distinct depth levels and the transition to the main channel. These features allow land areas, riverbank zones and watercourses to be considered separately without reducing the area to a single landscape type.
Culture and History
The Sf. Ioan Botezătorul Church in Malu is an Orthodox church dated to 1844 and listed in the national register of religious buildings. It was built in 1846 using income from the Giurgiu estate. When considering its history, you can examine the dating and the construction information separately.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Malu was incorporated into the Giurgiu Raia. According to local tradition, the settlement of Malu was founded around 7 August 1445; however, no official document confirms this date. Historical interests can therefore be pursued through both the period of administration and the local founding tradition.
The local theatre group “Cronos” performed at the cultural centre in the village of Malu, Giurgiu County; most recently, the group had taken a break. Those who include cultural activities alongside historic sites can consider this aspect separately from the architectural and settlement history.

National road DN 5C connects Giurgiu and Zimnicea. For your route planning, you can consider this road connection as separate information alongside the natural and cultural topics.
