Geography
Ţicleni lies in the valley of the Cioiana stream. To the north, the town is surrounded by the sub-Carpathian hills between the Jiu and Gilort rivers, the Dealurile lui Bran, and to the south by the hills of the Podişul Getic.
The administrative territory of Ţicleni includes part of the Coridorul Jiului Natura 2000 protected area (ROSCI0045), a European protected area of Community interest. A tourist route designated by Gorj County runs from Târgu Jiu via Scoarţa, Târgu Cărbuneşti (Ţicleni), Jupâneşti, Bărbăteşti, Săuleşti, Vladimir, Aninoasa, Turburea and Ţânţăreni, or Craiova.
Culture and History
Casa Ţicleni, a two-storey house originating from the town of Ţicleni in Gorj County, has a partially “fortified” ground floor and is inspired by the architecture of the old cule houses of Gorj.
The older Sfântul Gheorghe Church next to the parish church of Ţicleni was founded around 1800 and completely rebuilt in 1889. The Adormirea Maicii Domnului Church in the locality of Tunși, which belongs to Ţicleni, has its earliest documented date in 1601. It retains its ship-like form and has a bell tower clad in wood.
The archaeological site “Fortificaţia Latene de la Ţicleni – La Cetate” is a Geto-Dacian fortification from the La Tène period. It lies 2 km southwest of Ţicleni and 2 km southwest of the Cioiana stream.
In 1969, a Roman Republican coin hoard containing 240 Republican Roman silver denarii was discovered on Dealul Bujorului in the Tunși district. The coins date from the period 211–73 BC.
A church with the three patronages “Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, “Sfântul Mare Mucenic Dimitrie, Izvorâtorul de Mir” and “Sfânta Cuvioasă Parascheva” stands on the plateau of Dealul Bujorului. It was built between 1897 and 1899 and consecrated on 26 October 1899; the plateau lies at an elevation of 300 m.
Springs and Community
Ţicleni has saline and thermal springs that have been used for therapeutic treatments since 29 July 1973.
The “La Poalele Cetății” Festival held its seventh edition in 2025 and was dedicated to tradition, children and the community. It was organised by the Gorj County Council, the mayor’s office and the Local Council of Ţicleni through the Casa de Cultură Ţicleni cultural centre, CJCPCT Gorj and the “Constantin Brâncuși” School of Arts in Târgu Jiu.
When comparing a hotel in Ţicleni, you can compare your travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the offer pages. For your own planning, it is also helpful to keep the topics clearly separate: landscapes, religious buildings, archaeology, springs and events can be weighted independently without combining them into a single itinerary item.
