Discover Dittersdorf: Churches, Minerals and Trails
Dittersdorf offers a tangible introduction through its sacred architecture: the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church is a neo-Gothic building with two towers, 56 metres long and 23 metres wide; its towers are 75 metres high.
Culture
The sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church features decorative wall paintings, ornamental stained-glass windows and figurative compositions. Its interior decoration therefore encompasses both expansive paintings and colourful windows, as well as figurative design. The historic Szent Katalin Church was originally a fortified church. Its grounds contain a castle-like stone enclosure, two watchtowers and a sundial.
In the Felszeg district of Ditrău, the Szent Imre Chapel stands on the site of an earlier church. Dittersdorf thus brings together different sacred architectural forms and local histories: a neo-Gothic church building, an originally fortified church with preserved elements of its grounds, and a chapel on the site of an older church.
Geology and Landscape
The alkaline Ditrău Massif in the Giurgeu Mountains is home to a variety of unusual minerals and rocks; nepheline-sodalite syenite was first described there, and this rock is known as DITROIT. The geological connection therefore links the massif's overall diversity with a clearly assigned technical name.
The name DITROIT refers specifically to the named rock, not to an additional landscape form. Two levels therefore remain distinct for classification: the massif as a geological area and the rock type first described there as a technically named component. The massif thus brings together the geological area and the technical designation of a rock described there.
In the wider regional surroundings of Ditrău are Dealul Gropşoara Mountain, Vârful Mic Peak, Poiana Mountain and Răchitiş Peak. For orientation in the region, it is useful to retain each proper name separately.
Trails and Orientation
The Ditrău nature trail is 4.5 kilometres long and runs near Ţengheler Peak (Cengellér). On the Via Mariae, one stage leads from Toplița via Gălăuțaș, Sărmaș, Subcetate and Remetea to Ditrău; it is listed as 27.2 kilometres and 9 hours. The two trails therefore differ considerably in length, timeframe and route. Comparing the information for your own planning gives you a short local trail and a considerably longer stage with a specifically stated duration.
The Ditrău Tourist Information Centre is located at Strada Dealul Frumos No. 4/B.
