Leordina – Nature, Culture and Routes through Maramureș

Leordina lies within the “Munții Maramureșului” Natura 2000 site and combines protected landscapes with an unusually dense succession of churches, memorial sites and traditional customs.

Nature

Natural meadows and beech vegetation are found in the municipality of Leordina at elevations between 500 and 600 m; at the same time, the municipality lies in a landscape where this vegetation occurs at these elevations. The Bistra River runs through Leordina, where traditional fishing areas can be found.

Culture and History

The “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril” church was built of stone between 1864 and 1871. Local craftsmen built it with the support of the residents under the direction of the priest Paul Orosz. The municipality’s historical landscape also includes the “Monumentul Eroilor din Primul și al Doilea Război Mondial”: the monument is shaped like a wall, consists of cubic andesite stones and is 443 cm high overall.

The municipality’s military cemetery contains the “În memoria camarazilor căzuți” memorial. The cemetery is located 1 km from the Orthodox church and contains twelve crosses for German soldiers who were buried there in 1917.

Another Orthodox church is “Sfântul Proroc Ilie Tesviteanul”, also known as Leordina-Râu. It was founded in 2002; its structure is shaped like a cross with two slender flanking towers, a central tower and a spacious exterior balcony.

The historical references thus span several periods and forms of expression. The stone church built between 1864 and 1871 and the grave crosses documented for 1917 are followed by a more recent sacred landmark in the form of the church founded in 2002. The wall made of cubic andesite stones adds a memorial with a clearly defined shape and height to this sequence.

Routes through Leordina

The municipality is crossed by the DN 18 road. The 236 km route runs through Baia Mare, Sighetu Marmației, Borșa, Cârlibaba and Iacobeni. The Drumul Maramureșului is on a different scale: in Leordina, it is laid out as a route of more than 700 km through nature and culture and can be explored on foot or by bicycle.

Traditional Festivals

“Ruptul sterpelor” is considered the oldest pastoral festival in the area and recalls ancient Dacian traditions. In the municipality of Leordina, it is preserved as a traditional custom associated with a rural festival for villagers who keep sheep and for mountain residents.

The community festival “Fii satului” was an annual celebration held on the third Sunday in August to preserve and pass on local traditions. During the winter celebrations, young people perform the folk play “Viflaimul”; Christmas carols are also sung.
