Giulești – Culture and Landscape in the Mara Valley

Giulești is located in the western part of the Maramureș Depression, also known as “Țara Maramureșului”, in the Mara Valley. Around 5–6 km of the Mara River run through the village. Houses stretch along the river, while apple and plum orchards accompany the valleys. This combination of valley landscape, river course and orchards gives the place a clearly recognisable geographical character.

The archaeological site “Situl arheologic de la Giuleşti - La Biserică” is located in the centre of the village of Giulești next to the new church.

At the exit from the village, to the left of the bridge over the Mara River, stands the “Ilie Lazăr” memorial house at Strada Principală No. 292. It has been preserved and restored on site and belongs to the Museum of Maramureş.

The church Biserica Sfântul Nicolae is located in the immediate vicinity of Giulești. The wooden church Biserica de Lemn Susani is also located nearby. In the area around Giulești are the museum Muzeul de Stiintele Naturn Sighetu Marmaţiei and the historical site Casa Memorială Doctor Joan Mihalyi de Apsa Sighetu Marmaţier.
