Reen: Culture, Churches and Nature in Reghin

In Reghin, the open-air section of the “Anton Badea” Ethnographic Museum presents a model of a Mureș village with houses and outbuildings. The grounds also include a wooden church from Iara reconstructed at the museum in 1998, as well as traditional rural installations: a water mill from Vătava, an oil mill from Hodac and a wine press from Batoș.

Culture and History

The permanent exhibition “Viața satului mureşean” at the Ethnographic Museum displays representative cultural artefacts in seven rooms. The Saxon Museum in Reghin is a permanent museum that reconstructs the life of the Transylvanian Saxons in Reghin and the surrounding area through old traditional costumes, embroideries, household objects, books and ecclesiastical items. Local culture also includes two musical-instrument factories and numerous violin-making workshops.

The wooden church in Reghin, known as “Bisericuța lui Petru Maior”, is considered the only Romanian historical monument of national importance in the municipality of Reghin and is listed in the register of historic monuments. Its cruciform floor plan with three apses reflects Moldavian influences. The iconostasis, made in 1760, has royal doors with six painted medallions set within an openwork decorative panel featuring vines and grapes.

In front of the Evangelical Church stands the “Piramida Viorilor”, a monument to violin makers created by Barothy Adam that is 7.30 metres high. The Reformed Church at 51 Strada Mihai Viteazu was built in 1890 according to plans by the architect Alpár Ignác. Its furnishings include a pulpit, baldachin, altar furniture and church pews; the coffered ceiling depicts churches from Transylvania. A choral music festival is held annually in this church.

The Roman Catholic Church in Reghin is in the late Baroque style, was built during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa and completed in 1781. Its twelve stained-glass windows depict important Hungarian figures, kings and saints.

Nature and Cycling Trails

Pădurea Rotundă is an oak forest near Reghin designated as a nature reserve and used for recreation, sport and tourism. Colonies of European bee-eaters have been recorded in the area around Reghin; the species is protected at European level.

Two differently marked cycling routes with clearly defined courses are available for cycling. The yellow-marked Velopoteca Apusului is 5.4 kilometres long and runs from Strada Spitalului to Strada Mihai Viteazu. The red-marked Velopoteca Poienii is four kilometres long, runs from Strada Vânătorilor to Strada Dedradului and crosses Pădurea Hedel forest.
