History and Commemoration

Weissenkirch introduces a local context in which Petőfi commemorations, historic sites and landscapes stand alongside one another. One of the last battles of the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848–1849 took place in Albești. Every summer, on the last Sunday in July, the Petőfi Festival commemorates the 1849 battle and the death of the poet Petőfi Sándor.

The Petőfi Memorial Park was created by Countess Lujza Haller together with the Petőfi Memorial House. On the former Haller family estate, a ten-metre-high Turul monument erected in 1899 stands beside a suspected mass grave. The Petőfi memorial site in Albești was also expanded with statues of Sándor Petőfi and József Bem.

The Petőfi Memorial Complex in Albești was inaugurated on 26 July following the renovation of the old museum, the construction of a new exhibition space and the establishment of a permanent exhibition. The exhibition is dedicated to the history of the locality, the Revolution of 1848–1849, the Battle of Sighișoara–Albești and the disappearance of the poet Petőfi Sándor. The Petőfi Memorial Museum comprises three rooms with contemporary documents and objects from the life of Petőfi Sándor, as well as a scale model of the battlefield in Albești.

The Albești-Cetățea archaeological site is another historical point of reference. It lies 3 km south of Albești, on a hill in the Șarpatoc Valley.

Nature and Landscape

The municipality of Albești lies in the central section of the Târnava Mare river basin. Its southern part is located in the Podișul Hârtibaciului. These two geographical details place the local context between a river basin and a plateau, without reducing the landscape to a single type of terrain.

Several protected areas are represented in different proportions within the municipality's administrative territory: ROSCI0227 Sighișoara–Târnava Mare covers 35%, ROSPA0028 Dealurile Târnavelor–Valea Nirajului 4% and ROSPA0099 Podișul Hârtibaciului 34%. Trails and Regional Context

The municipality of Albești is crossed from west to east by the DN 13–E60 road. As part of the visitor infrastructure of the Colinele Transilvaniei destination, the themed trail “Descoperă comuna Albești – Colinele Transilvaniei” was approved. In Mureș County, it includes six administrative units: Vânători, Saschiz, Albești, Sighișoara, Apold and Daneș.

In addition, the Albești Local Council approved the marking of hiking trails within the municipality as part of the Colinele Transilvaniei destination. The different themes and trail connections allow for an objective comparison of culture, landscape and outdoor activity, while the places mentioned make the regional framework of the themed trail visible.
