Văratec combines a monastery ensemble with a forest and landscape reserve as well as a mountain hiking trail. The monastery ensemble comprises the three churches “Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, “Sfântul Ioan Botezatorul” and “Schimbarea la Fata”, as well as the monastic village of Văratec. The ensemble also includes the Museum of Ancient Art.

Culture and History

The church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” was built between 1808 and 1812 from river stone and bricks. At the eastern apse stands a bronze statue of Safta Brâncoveanu, erected in 1935 and created by the sculptor Ion Jalea. The connection between church architecture, art and historic monuments is also evident at the church “Naşterea Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul”.

This church was built in 1844. The grave of the poet Veronica Micle is located beside it. The building features a pronounced Baroque style, three towers, a wooden bell tower and a stone vestibule. The church “Schimbarea la Faţă” was built in 1847. Casa Lahovari in Văratec is a registered historic monument from the late 19th century; its monument number is LMI 2015-NT-II-m-B-10731.

The construction dates and forms create different architectural accents within the ensemble.

Monasteries in the Surrounding Area

Schitul Sâhăstria, a monastery, is located in the vicinity of Văratec. Mânăstirea Secu, also a monastery, is likewise located in the surrounding area. Mănăstire Bistriţa is situated in the wider regional surroundings of Văratec and is also a monastery. The three destinations have different spatial relationships to Văratec and do not form part of the monastery ensemble itself.

Landscape

Pădurea de Argint, a mixed forest and landscape reserve with trees more than 100 years old, is located near Văratec Monastery. Dealul Mare Văratecul, a hill, is also located in the immediate surroundings of Văratec. Dealul Neamţului is situated in the vicinity of Văratec and is likewise a hill.

Vârful Vadurile and Bâlca Roşeni are located in the wider regional surroundings. Both are classified as mountains. The landscape around Văratec therefore encompasses different named landforms: the reserve with its old trees, the nearby hills and the mountains in the wider regional surroundings.

For a thematic comparison, the reserve, hills and mountains can be considered separately, while their respective spatial relationships are retained.

Hiking Route

The mountain hiking trail from Mănăstirea Sihla passes through Poiana Ciungi Văratecului, Valea Cracăului and the centre of Văratec, ending at Văratec Monastery.

When choosing a hotel in Văratec, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions provide an objective framework for comparison. These three details can be considered independently and then weighted according to one’s own scheduling and practical requirements. This keeps the selection transparent without presupposing a particular accommodation or set of amenities.
