Meseșenii de Sus between Springs, Trails and History

Human traces dating from the transition period between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age were discovered in the Osoiul Măcăului area within the territory of Meseșenii de Sus.

Culture

An ethnographic exhibition was set up in a classroom at the school in Meseșenii de Sus. It includes furniture, textiles, vessels and tools used by ordinary people. “Meseșana” is a girls’ folklore ensemble from Meseșenii de Sus, led by Herle Dana.

The exhibition and the ensemble represent different focal points within the local culture: traditional everyday objects take center stage in one, while the other presents folklore through an ensemble made up of girls. The archaeological traces from Osoiul Măcăului, in turn, date from a considerably earlier period.

Landscape and Trails

South of Meseșenii de Sus, at the foot of the Meseș Mountains, two mineral springs were historically exploited in a wooded hilly landscape. The two springs are considered sulfurous, sulfated, rich in hydrogen carbonate and calcium, and hypotonic.

Hiking trails follow the Roman road southwest over the summit of Cărbunaru (618 m). The hiking trails continue to the summit of Osoiul Ciontului (835 m). From the summit of Osoiul Ciontului, the hiking trails descend to the Băile of Meseșenii de Sus. Roman defensive ruins are still visible in the higher-lying areas of the locality.

Springs and History

In the area of the springs, there was a basic accommodation and treatment facility with 33 beds in 12 rooms and 10 bathing cubicles. The spa facility operated seasonally from May to October until the early 1990s.

The former Băile Meseșenii de Jos are abandoned and in an advanced state of deterioration. The mineral water spring is currently unused; the site is privately owned and lies away from the main transport routes.

The springs landscape thus combines earlier seasonal use with a present-day condition characterized by abandonment, disuse and private ownership. This distinction in time and practical use remains relevant even when the springs are considered together with the trails and local history.
