Vale: Village History and Sarmale Tradition in Mărginimea Sibiului

Vale is one of the 18 villages of Mărginimea Sibiului, an ethnographic region in Romania. The village brings together a rural settlement structure, Orthodox religious buildings, a historic road layout, and traditional regional cuisine. These individual connections range from the 17th century to the present day of the culinary tradition.

Culture

The rural ensemble “Centrul istoric al localității” in Vale, Săliște, is listed as a historic monument under code SB-II-a-B-12578. It includes Bisericii Street, the churchyard, and the Orthodox cemetery. Its origins date from the 17th to the 19th century. The historic village area therefore encompasses a designated street space as well as ecclesiastical grounds and a cemetery.

The “Sf. Treime” Church in Vale is listed as a historic monument under code SB-II-m-B-12579 at Strada Mare 106. The Orthodox “Sfânta Treime” Church was built in 1763 and painted in 1783. The construction and painting therefore took place in different years and mark two chronologically separate stages in its history.

Next to the Orthodox “Sf. Treime” Church stands the tomb monument of Ioan Băilă. The monument dates from the 19th century. At this location, the church and tomb monument constitute two independent testimonies, each with its own dating.

A glass icon by Nicolae Oancea is attributed to a rural workshop from Vale in the Mărginimea Sibiului region of Transylvania. This work brings together the artist’s name, the workshop connection, and the regional origin as another cultural reference associated with the village.

Region and Routes

An old road connection leads via Cristian, Orlat, and Sibiel to Vale, and continues on to Săliște and Tilișca. In this described route, Vale lies between the three previously mentioned places and the two subsequent stops. The connection places the village within a clearly defined context involving several villages and settlements in the surrounding area. This sequence makes Vale one section of a longer connection: Cristian, Orlat, and Sibiel lie before it, while Săliște and Tilișca come after it. For the regional classification, it is therefore not only the individual village that is relevant, but also its position between the named stops. The old road layout likewise places Vale within the context of its surroundings.

Culinary Tradition

“Gusturi și Tradiții din Săliște” takes place every year at different locations in the nine villages belonging to Săliște, including Vale. The venue is therefore not the same every year; Vale is one of the named villages where the event may take place.

Sarmale are among the traditional regional dishes. They are prepared according to a special recipe passed down from generation to generation: finely rolled, placed on a seasoned bed of cabbage, and slowly cooked in earthenware pots over low heat. The preparation combines the rolled form with the cabbage bed, the earthenware pot, and the slow cooking process.
