Căsoi: Tinovul Mare and Via Transilvanica

Near Căsoi and Poiana Stampei lies the ROSCI0247 Tinovul Mare protected area.

Nature

Tinovul Mare is an oligotrophic, forested peatland ecosystem. Peat has accumulated there over thousands of years. The protected area preserves active peatlands, peatlands with forest vegetation, and degraded peatlands capable of natural regeneration. The associated habitat types are listed under codes 7110, 91D0 and 7120.

The carnivorous round-leaved sundew, Drosera rotundifolia, grows in Tinovul Mare. The rare species Ligularia sibirica also grows there.

Trails

The themed trail through Tinovul Mare is an easy hiking trail. A wooden boardwalk leads across the peatland; it is approximately 800 to 900 metres long and follows a one-way route. Information boards and signposts make the themed trail easy to follow. There is also a map of the trail at the entrance to the protected area.

A leisurely round trip takes approximately one hour. The trail ends at a small meadow where the Dornișoara stream flows. The trail is described as suitable for travel on foot, by bicycle or with a pushchair.

The trail description distinguishes between three separate details: the approximate length of the boardwalk, the direction of the route and the approximate duration of the round trip. The map at the entrance and the signs along the route indicate different orientation elements of the same themed trail.

Getting There and Orientation

After ending in Dornișoară, the Gura Haitii–Pietrele Roșii–Dornișoara hiking trail reaches Poiana Stampei via local and forest roads. There it meets the E576, also known as DN17, between Suceava, Vatra Dornei and Bistrița-Năsăud. Călimani National Park maintains a visitor information point in the municipality of Poiana Stampei, staffed by park rangers.

From Poiana Stampei, the access road to Tinovul Mare branches off to the left from the DN17, also known as E58, at the turn-off to the village of Dornișoara at the level of Căsoi. It then continues for approximately 3 to 4 kilometres along a surfaced gravel road through the forest to the information board at the entrance to the protected area.

Geographical Setting

The Bucovina section of the Via Transilvanica ends in Poiana Stampei, the administrative centre of the municipality of the same name, which also includes Căsoi. After Poiana Stampei, the Via Transilvanica continues towards Lunca Ilvei. There, at the foot of the Rodna Mountains, the 210-kilometre-long Highlands section begins.

Căsoi is one of the places along the route of the Via Transilvanica. The eastern side of the Tihuța Pass lies in the village of Căsoi in Poiana Stampei, Suceava County. The section of DN17 in Căsoi runs along the right-hand side from km 116+000 to km 123+970 and is 7.970 kilometres long.

Culture

The Balul Gospodarilor takes place annually in Poiana Stampei. This traditional cultural celebration promotes local customs, folk costumes and authentic traditions of the region.
