Arbore Commune: Hotels and Accommodation

Arbore is home to the Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, which forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Churches of Moldavia”. This site comprises eight churches in northern Moldavia with exterior paintings. The village of Arbore belongs to the commune.

Culture

The Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist in Arbore was built in 1502 by Hetman Luca Arbore. Its exterior painting programme includes the scene “The Siege of Constantinople”; this is said to be the last example of this scene on the exterior of a church.

Construction of the Sfânta Treime Church in Arbore began on 10 May 1901 and was completed in 1908. It was consecrated on 29 August 1912. Its iconography depicts 16 national saints in Romanian traditional costumes.

The Evangelical Church in Arbore was built in 1912 by the local Evangelical community, which consisted mainly of German settlers. It features Neo-Gothic influences, including a tall bell tower and tall, round-arched windows. It has preserved part of its original furnishings, including wooden benches and a simple altar.

Over the course of three generations, the Hrib family assembled the collection of the Toader Hrib Village Museum from household items used by Romanian peasants, weapons and old coins. The museum displayed, among other things, pottery fragments, wooden tools, chests, icons, old coins, flutes, bagpipes, old photographs and decorated eggs; some objects were unique pieces.

Geographical setting

The DJ 2K county road from Solca to Milișăuți runs through the centre of the village of Arbore. The Roman Catholic Church of “Nașterea Sfintei Fecioare Maria” in Arbore is located on the road connecting Câmpulung Moldovenesc and Rădăuți.

Landscape

The landscape around Arbore is characterised by gentle hills and remnants of forest. To the west, the Obcinele Bucovinei form the backdrop and boundary of the area.

Arbore Commune has a 50-hectare area covered with acacia woodland, which is associated with the “FLOARE DE SALCÂM” folk festival. An apple and cherry orchard is one of the local attractions in Arbore Commune.

Customs

New Year customs in Arbore include Căluțul, Irozii and Banda. The Irozii performance is accompanied by a group of musicians. The performers wear traditional costumes decorated with beads and colourful ribbons.
