Putna Commune: Hotels and Accommodations

Putna Monastery was built by Ștefan cel Mare between 1466 and 1469. Until the time of Petru Rareș, Putna Monastery became the princely necropolis for members of its founder’s family. Shortly after its consecration, it became an important center of Romanian culture and art.

Culture

The Romanian Orthodox Church Biserica „Nașterea Maicii Domnului“ in Putna was built between 1900 and 1908 and is located in the village cemetery near Putna’s wooden church. The Roman Catholic Church Biserica „Coborârea Duhului Sfânt“ in Putna was built in 1936 and is located in the center of the village of Putna.

According to tradition, the Romanian Orthodox wooden church Biserica de lemn „Intrarea Maicii Domnului în Biserică“, also known as Biserica de lemn „Dragoș Vodă“ or Schitul Putna, dates from the mid-14th century. The historic wooden church now serves as a chapel and museum. The decoration of eggs remains a living artistic craft tradition in Putna to this day.

The treasure tower is one of the surviving fortification elements of Putna Monastery. The museum of Putna Monastery is located on the western side of the monastery complex next to the Paraclis.

Landscape

Chilia lui Daniil Sihastrul is a grotto carved into a rock in the valley of the Vițău stream and is located about 1 kilometer from Putna Monastery. Dealul Crucii, also called Crucişorul, is marked by a monumental stone cross without an inscription and lies southeast of the monastery, immediately beyond the Putna stream.

The wooded hills around Putna reach elevations of up to 800 meters. The two settlements belonging to Putna Commune originally developed in the valley of the Putna stream.

Sihăstria Putnei Monastery is a place visited by pilgrims for religious services held there, spiritual guidance, and a time of rest.

Townscape and Transport

The center of Putna extends along the DN 2H main road. The Suceava–Putna railway line has been reopened.
