Călimănești: Monasteries, Spa History and the Olt Gorge
Culture and History
A specific historical landmark in Călimănești is the Roman fort of Arutela in Poiana Bivolari near Păușa, within Călimănești. The monument from the Roman era belongs to value category A and is dated to AD 137–138. As part of a line of defense, the fort secured traffic through the Olt Valley towards Transylvania.
The Cozia Monastery in the locality of Cozia–Căciulata within Călimănești is a monument in value category A and is dated to 1388–1391. Its surviving features include Byzantine wall paintings of inestimable value to Romanian and European cultural and artistic heritage.
The Ostrov Monastery on Ostrov Island in the Olt dates from 1520–1522. Inside, it preserves wall paintings from 1760, meaning that, in addition to the building itself, furnishings from a later period have also been preserved.
At the foot of Mount Cozia and not far from the Olt lies the Turnu Monastery. It is located 600 m from the railway station of the same name. Around the Turneanu Ridge in the Cozia Massif, several hermitages and cells carved into the rock have survived to this day.
The spa history and transport structures also form part of the townscape. Călimănești’s central spa bathing establishment was built in 1881–1886 and, after reconstruction in 1911–1912, became known as the central pavilion building of the spa resort, the so-called Pavilionul Central. Completed in 1899, the Călimănești railway station building is considered a remarkable structure and is reminiscent of the railway station in Sinaia.

For a hotel in Călimănești, travel dates, room category and cancellation policies form a separate practical framework. These details can be compared objectively when selecting accommodation and stand alongside the town’s historic sites, spa architecture and landscapes. The same details remain decisive for a price comparison: travel dates define the period under consideration, the room category describes the intended type of room, and the cancellation policies define the scope for possible changes. Considering these three details together makes differences between hotel offers understandable and keeps accommodation information clearly organized as a separate practical area for comparison.
Landscape and Nature
The spa resort of Călimănești-Căciulata lies at the entrance to the spectacular Olt Gorge and borders the Cozia Massif. This means that the river landscape of the Olt and the mountain landscape of the massif meet directly at the town.
Within the administrative territory of the town of Călimănești, the Olt forms the most spectacular section of the Turnu Roșu–Câineni gorge.
Cozia National Park is a protected area with landscape, geological and geomorphological, floristic, faunal and forestry values. Mountain hiking, scientific tourism, extreme sports, recreation and leisure activities are possible in the park.
Forest roads as well as marked and unmarked tourist trails run along the Păușa stream. They provide opportunities to access higher mountain areas; the different types of routes and the forms of use mentioned describe different aspects of the natural environment.
