Băile Govora – Trails, Mineral Waters and Historic Architecture

Băile Govora stretches along the Hința stream in a small hollow surrounded by wooded hills. The hills around Băile Govora are covered with beech and oak forests; the forested area covers 847 ha.

Landscape

The 20-hectare Parcul Central features footpaths, a bandstand, an open-air mini-amphitheatre, a water-and-light cascade, statues, benches and a children's playground.

The Izvorul Ferdinand spring lies in the spa park on the right bank of the Hința stream, in the area with the greatest abundance of sulphurous mineral waters.

Băile Govora has both deep iodinated waters and shallow sulphurous mineral waters formed through mineralisation.

Getting Around

A specially created cycle route runs along the spa path through the forest towards Curături.

A circular walk from Băile Govora follows the spa path and returns to the park through the beech forest.

The two route options focus on different experiences: the cycle route follows the spa path through the forest towards Curături, while the circular walk returns to the park. Those who want to experience the local landscape in a linear direction will find a different route format in the cycle route than in the circular walk. This makes it possible to plan the cycle route and the walk separately as part of the day's itinerary, without conflating their respective courses.

In Băile Govora, the landscape and routes, mineral waters, and culture can be considered as separate thematic highlights. This allows outdoor spaces and activities to be planned alongside water and historic sites, without the different features of the town merging into a single experience.

Culture

Hotel Palace was built between 1911 and 1914 in an eclectic style combining Rococo, Baroque, Classicism, Renaissance and decorative elements of Romanian folk style.

Hotel Ștefănescu was built between March 1900 and April 1902 and combines distinctive elements of folk architecture with Classical features.

The Virginia Andreescu-Haret Cultural Centre is housed in the former cinema building, which, together with the Central Park ensemble, is listed as a historic monument.

The “Preot Gheorghe Petre–Govora” Museum of Archaeology and Religious Art was founded in 1974 with archaeological finds, icons and old books collected by the person after whom it is named.

The buildings and collections offer different cultural perspectives, ranging from architectural styles to archaeology and religious art.

Getting There

From Râmnicu Vâlcea, Băile Govora can be reached via the DN 7 or DN 67, followed by the DJ 649.

Those arriving by train travel to Râmnicu Vâlcea railway station and continue to Băile Govora using local transport services or a taxi.
