Discover Ocnele Mari: History, Saltwater and Landscape

The over 2,000-year-old Dacian fortress of Buridava was discovered in Ocnele Mari. Its mention in the writings of the Greek historian Ptolemy adds a written trace to the archaeological find. The fortress thus brings a history of more than two thousand years into the local history of Ocnele Mari. For historical orientation, Buridava therefore combines a specific archaeological site with a tradition reaching far back in time.

The “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church in Ocnele Mari was restored and integrated into the tourist tour. It is therefore a different historical feature from Buridava: a restored religious building rather than a discovered Dacian fortress. At Buridava, the focus is on its far-reaching history; at the church, the defining details are its restoration and inclusion in the tourist tour. For travel planning, these two cultural points of reference can therefore be considered separately.

Evantai is a white geological formation made of Cretaceous tuff. It stands out above the forest on one of the hills around Ocnele Mari. The white color is part of its visible appearance, while the Cretaceous tuff provides its geological classification. For travel planning, Evantai is therefore a specific landscape point between forest and hills.

The spatial references differ between the peaks. The peak Dealul Piscul Gruiu is located in the vicinity of Ocnele Mari, and the peak Șuvița Olănești is also in the vicinity. The peak Dealul Butoi, however, is located in the wider regional surroundings of Ocnele Mari. Dealul Butoi thus extends the landscape reference beyond the vicinity of Ocnele Mari. In a regional overview of Ocnele Mari, these three spatial references should therefore remain separate. Two peaks are located near the town, while another lies within a broader regional framework. This distinction can help with general travel planning when landscape references are not to be grouped into a single local area.

Ocnele Mari’s balneary visitor offering includes saltwater swimming pools. Here, balneary refers to the part of the visitor offering to which these swimming pools belong. For travel planning, this area can be considered a separate part of the stay alongside the historical points of reference and landscape features. The swimming pools complement the historical and landscape themes with Ocnele Mari’s balneary aspect. In this way, the saltwater remains an independent part of a stay in Ocnele Mari.
