The Čiernohronská železnica operates on a track gauge of 760 millimetres. In the 2026 season, motor trains will run to Vydrovo, while steam trains will operate daily on the routes to Dobroč and Šánske.

Nature

The entrance to Bystrianská jaskyňa is about 120 metres from the car park and can be reached with only a slight difference in elevation. Harmanecká jaskyňa is known for its large collapse chambers, an especially rich abundance of soft sinter and numerous hibernating bats.

Since 2016, the Banská Bystrica Geopark has been a national geopark of the Slovak Republic and has been included in the network of geoparks of the Slovak Republic. It contains 16 educational trails and 30 tourist hiking trails. The geopark encompasses 292 sites, including geological, mining, natural, cultural-historical and archaeological sites. Its territory overlaps with Veľká Fatra National Park, Nízke Tatry National Park and Poľana Protected Landscape Area.

Nízke Tatry National Park is characterised by long valleys, deep gorges and steep rock faces. It is home to strong populations of bears, lynxes and wolves; Tatra chamois and marmots are also found there.

Bystrý potok Waterfall is a national natural monument with a 23-metre-high drop and is one of the largest waterfalls in the volcanically formed Western Carpathians.

Muránska planina National Park encompasses more than 300 caves and 15 abysses, as well as sinkholes, karren, gorges, rock towers and rock windows.

The deciduous and mixed forests around Banská Bystrica provide refuge for numerous wild animals and contain botanically interesting and valuable sites.

Bátovský balvan is a natural monument in the Hrochotská dolina that is 14 metres high and has a diameter of 8 metres. Jánošíkova skala is a volcanic rock cliff there that is approximately 30 metres high and 200 metres long.

Kalamárka is a natural monument and an archaeological site. At the same time, Kalamárka is a popular hiking destination and an attractive spot for sport climbers.

Culture and History

Construction of the Čiernohronská železnica began in 1908, regular operations started in 1909, and its network of branch lines eventually reached a total length of 132 kilometres.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the historic town of Banská Štiavnica and its technical monuments includes historic water reservoirs, ponds and collection ditches that were built for mining and the town’s water supply.

The Banská Bystrica Geopark preserves an elaborate water-supply system approximately 40 kilometres long, which is connected with former copper mining.

The crosses of Podpoľanie are a distinctive regional expression of unique wooden grave and roadside crosses. An exhibition of wooden grave crosses is located in the cemetery in Detva.

The “Nature of Central Slovakia” exhibition at the Central Slovakia Museum provides a comprehensive insight into the natural environment and landscape of this region through 2,400 exhibits in eight departments.

Things to Do

The Hrádok – Mikova železná cesta via ferrata runs across the rock massif at Hrádok and offers views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

The Barborská cesta passes significant mining monuments and attractions connected with the mining tradition of the former central Slovak mining towns. Sections of it can be walked or cycled along partial routes between the municipalities. The route is approximately 190 kilometres long, is intended to take 8 to 9 days, follows marked hiking trails and can be started at any section.

Culinary Experiences and the City

The Coffee Tour Banská Bystrica takes visitors through two local cafés and a local roastery, offering insights into the world of specialty coffee.

The well-known Špania Dolina lace is still produced in Špania Dolina today.
