Dobroč – Culture, History and Trails in Čierny Balog

Dobroč is the largest settlement in Čierny Balog. As early as around 1700, the settlement had a good basic infrastructure. Today, religious heritage, memorial sites, historical traces and trails come together here to create a diverse local character. The themes range from the history of the former settlement to the distinctive nature of the surrounding area.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of “Kostol Premenenia Pána”, an immovable cultural monument, is located in the Dobroč district. Local believers built it themselves between 1934 and 1936. On 16 October 1936, the church was consecrated by Monsignor Andrej Hlinka. Its interior houses first-class relics of Saint Sister Faustina Kowalska, including part of one of the saint’s finger bones.

One of the memorial sites in the district is the monument “Pomník - zavraždení partizáni”. It is registered as a national cultural monument under ÚZPF number 124 and dates from 1959. A partisan bunker from the period of the Slovak National Uprising, the SNP, is also located in the Dobroč district. It too is registered as a national cultural monument, under ÚZPF number 127. Another monument bears the name “Pomník obetiam fašizmu – zavraždení partizáni” and is located outside the Dobroč district, in the Brôtovo area.

History

Dobroč is also connected with the life story of Jozef Dekret Matejovie. He was born on 12 July 1774 in the former logging settlement of Dobroč, now part of the municipality of Čierny Balog, as the son of the lumberjack Ján Dekret. Jozef Dekret Matejovie later became an important pioneer of modern forestry. A memorial plaque marks the site of his former birthplace in Dobroč.

Trails

The blue loop route of the Čiernohronská železnica provides a direct connection between Čierny Balog and Dobroč. It runs between Čierny Balog and Dobroč and passes by the football stadium. The blue loop route to Dobroč is 4 km long. It is suitable for prams, bicycles and dogs, so the route accommodates different ways of travelling together.

Nature

The Dobročský prales National Nature Reserve lies in the Brôtovo valley basin, about 6 km beyond the Dobroč district.
