Cierny Balog between Forest History and Viewpoints

In Cierny Balog, the almost five-kilometre-long Chodník lesného času educational trail in the Lesnícky skanzen leads visitors through 88 stations to the secrets of the forest, the history of forestry and the work of foresters.

Culture

Components of the Čiernohronská úzkokol. lesná železnica in Čierny Balog, including a station building and a narrow-gauge track, are registered as national cultural monuments. The parish church in Čierny Balog is dedicated to the Nanebovzatie Panny Márie and was built between 1797 and 1804.

The Lesnícky skanzen is an open-air museum dedicated to forestry throughout Slovakia and is located in the Vydrovská dolina valley near Čierny Balog. This open-air museum includes a replica of a forest chapel and a Symbolický lesnícky cintorín.

The Fašiangový festival “Už sa fašiang kráti...” took place in 2026 in its 29th edition, from 13 to 17 February.

Nature

The Dobročský prales National Nature Reserve is located in the municipality of Čierny Balog, six kilometres south of the settlement Dobroč, at the end of the Brôtovo valley in the Pod Geraukou area.

The wooden rozhľadňa Pustý vrch observation tower is eleven metres high and is located above the Komov and Pusté districts of Čierny Balog. It has two viewing platforms at heights of three and six metres; from there, visitors can see Čierny Balog and the surrounding nature. The rozhľadňa Urbanov klobúk observation tower offers views of the Nízke Tatry, the Veporské vrchy and Poľana.

Trails

The Náučný chodník históriou a tradíciami obce Čierny Balog educational trail leads directly to the Lesnícky skanzen in the Vydrovská dolina valley and starts at the municipal office. On the way to the Lesnícky skanzen, it offers a soft, nature-friendly alternative to the paved main road.

The educational trail, viewpoints and seasonal railway routes can be considered separately by theme and season. The information about three and six metres, almost five kilometres and the summer season provides different reference points for planning a day trip.

For the summer season, the Čiernohronská železnica has designated the Čierny Balog – Vydrovská dolina (Lesnícky skanzen) route. For the summer season, the Čiernohronská železnica has also designated the Čierny Balog – Dobroč route via the football pitch.
