Landscape and Nature

The surveyed underground labyrinth of the Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov is 19,885 metres long and 324 metres deep. The preserved stand of sessile oaks at Breznianska Skalka is considered a unique botanical, dendrological and phytogeographical feature of the region.

Culture and History

The Čiernohronská lesná železnica is a narrow-gauge railway whose foundations were laid in 1909. It has several steam and diesel locomotives as well as historic observation carriages. From the central station in Čierny Balog, it runs in three directions: to Vydrovo, Dobroč and Šánske.

The Horehronské cyklodreziny are light rail vehicles powered by pedalling and run on tracks with a gauge of 760 mm. They operate on the Čiernohronské železnice line between Hronec and the Šánske siding and back.

The Museum of Horehronie in Brezno is now located in two buildings directly on the town square. The museum includes the house of a blue-print master craftsman, with a wooden textile mangle.

At Salaš Zbojská, visitors can join the Bača and the Vlachs in feeding the sheep and other animals, as well as in making cheese and Oštiepky. Traditional Slovak cuisine is served there, with a focus on mutton and lamb.

Activities

The National Biathlon Centre in Osrblie offers optimal year-round training conditions for active athletes, amateurs and the general sporting public. It was confirmed as the venue for the 2024 Open European Championships and has hosted Biathlon World Championships on roller skis.

The ski resort in Mýto pod Ďumbierom has groomed slopes for beginners and more experienced skiers, one chairlift and five surface lifts. In summer, it transforms into a bike park, offering bicycle and e-bike rental, servicing and an MTB school.

Organised rafting on the Hron includes boats, paddles and equipment, the transport of boats and people, as well as secure parking. The Tále educational trail features interactive elements with information panels about the nature of the Low Tatras.
