Malá Čalomija: History, Church and Hotels
The area of Malá Čalomija has been continuously inhabited since the Copper Age, known as the Eneolithic. The place combines written records, ecclesiastical architectural and art history, memorials, folk culture, traditional viticulture and nature in the wider regional surroundings.
History
The original settlement of Čalomija is first documented in writing in 1244. Malá Čalomija emerged in the first half of the 14th century, when Čalomija was divided into two parts. The first written mention of Malá Čalomija dates from 1342. The area of the present-day municipality also contains settlement finds from the Hallstatt period and the Roman era, as well as a Slavic inhumation cemetery from the 8th century. Written records and archaeological evidence thus mark different periods in the history of the settlement.
Culture
The Protestant church in Malá Čalomija was consecrated in 1787 and renovated in the Neoclassical style in 1884. It is a Neoclassical hall church dating from 1884 and stands on the site of a wooden church from 1690. Inside, there is a Neoclassical altar with L. Kubányi’s 1896 painting “Kristus medzi deťmi” and an organ dating from 1894. The tower dates from 1800 and is topped by a distinctive Baroque-style onion dome with a lantern. In the Slovak Central List of Monuments, the Protestant church is registered under number 459/0.
The Protestant vicarage in Malá Čalomija, a late-Classical building dating from around 1850, is part of the church’s surroundings. On the wall of the vicarage next to the church, at house number 78, there is a plaque dedicated to Lehoczky Dániel. A black marble plaque at the vicarage commemorates Lehoczky Dániel (1759–1841), who worked there from 1789 until his death as a clergyman, writer and educator.
Services are held every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the Protestant church of Malá Čalomija. Folk traditions and culture are maintained in Malá Čalomija, and folklore groups are also active there. Another memorial is the Zslipka-kereszt, a dark-grey stone cross with a white figure of Christ and an inscription on the pedestal.
