Hotel in Veľká Čalomija – Culture between Pustý kostol and the Ipeľ

Archaeological research dated Pustý kostol to the first half of the 13th century. The single-nave Romanesque church with an apse facing east is located in a small wooded area north of Veľká Čalomija. The site is marked with information boards along the main road and at the church; a prepared road leads there.

History

A medieval bronze aquamanile depicting an armed horseman was found near Pustý kostol in 1947. The piece discovered near Veľká Čalomija is now held at the Stredoslovenské múzeum in Banská Bystrica. Another historical site is located directly in Veľká Čalomija: a reinforced-concrete military bunker dating from 1937. It served to protect the former Czechoslovak border and was used as a light fortification during the Second World War. The bunker was reconstructed in 2021 and is currently open to visitors.

Culture

The local village museum opened in 2009. It is housed in a three-room building displaying antique furniture, contemporary traditional costumes, photographs, pictures and tools used by earlier generations. The museum grounds also include a summer kitchen, a brick-built vaulted earth cellar, a shaft well, a pond, a courtyard oven and a shelter. These areas are used for barbecuing, entertainment or quiet relaxation.

The religious heritage is reflected in several different buildings. The Church of the Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic church built in 1911 in the Secession style. The mural inside has been restored; the original painting was created by Gyula Ádám in 1932. The Evangelical church was built in 1934 according to plans by a Czech architect, using Hussite architectural elements.

Various cultural events are held every year in the local amphitheatre, which has a covered stage and covered audience seating. More recent memorial sites also form part of Veľká Čalomija's cultural character. The municipal cemetery contains the renovated grave of the Polish soldier Andrzej Paruch. Memorial plaques in the village commemorate Polish refugees from the Second World War.

Geographical setting

The Ipeľ flows through Veľká Čalomija and also forms the border with Hungary. The river is therefore not only a defining landscape feature but also part of the village's geographical setting.
