Culture and History
The Andrej Kmeť Museum is located in the first building of the Slovak National Museum. Larger groups are asked to reserve their visit in advance; at admission and during guided tours, booked groups are given preference over visitors without reservations.
The Turiec Gallery is housed in the former county hall on Námestie SNP in Martin, which was built in 1740. The Turiec Gallery in Martin presents a permanent exhibition of Slovak art of the 20th century, featuring works by figures associated with the Turiec region. This permanent exhibition also includes a section on Mikuláš Galanda's painting, graphic art and applied art. Martin National Cemetery is designated as a national cultural monument.
The Museum of the Slovak Village in Martin is Slovakia's largest open-air ethnographic museum. It comprises 129 residential, agricultural, technical, community and sacred buildings; some interiors are open to visitors. Since 1991, the museum has hosted Ethnographic Year program events featuring demonstrations of traditional production, crafts, customs and folklore.
Sklabiňa Castle was the seat of the county administrators of Turiec County for 450 years and is open year-round for an admission fee. Zniev Castle is considered the oldest known castle in the Turiec region and is situated at an elevation of 985 meters. The ruins of Starý Hrad are also located in the vicinity of Martin District; in the wider regional surroundings of Martin District are the ruins of Zniev and Likava.
Nature
Mount Bukovina is located in the immediate vicinity of Martin District. Mount Kalužná is located in the surroundings of Martin District. Mount Trebostovský Kopec and Mount Veľká Lúka are also located in the surrounding area.
The first 8 kilometers of the Gader Valley, from Blatnica to the confluence with the Dedošova Valley, run along a well-maintained asphalt road suitable for road bikes and scooters. The Gader Valley is home to the Čertova brána rock formation and Mlynčekovo, with numerous small watermills in various shapes and designs.
The Šútovo Waterfall is 38 meters high and the highest waterfall in the Little Fatra. The cycling route over Martinské hole connects Vrútky and Martin over a distance of 22 kilometers. It leads to the Chata na Martinských holiach mountain hut at an elevation of 1,250 meters, which offers snacks and refreshments.
