Rabčice – Hotel Between Nature, Culture and Winter Tradition

Rabčice lies in the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area and combines protected nature with Goral culture. It is also home to a winter event, a cross-border cycle route and regional specialities.

Nature

Within the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area, Rabčice belongs to Zone D, with the second level of protection. A stricter classification applies to the peat bogs in the Rabčické bory locality: they are located in Zone B, with the fourth level of protection. As part of the Natura 2000 network, the cadastral area of Rabčice also belongs to the Horná Orava Special Protection Area, which is important for international bird conservation.

The town’s protected natural heritage also includes two remarkable trees. A large-leaved lime tree stands in the Rabčice cemetery; it is approximately 350 years old and 27 metres tall. Its trunk circumference is 680 centimetres and its crown is 18 metres wide; it has been protected since 1974. A wych elm stands at the entrance to Rabčice, by house or cottage no. 422. It is estimated to be 250 years old, 35 metres tall, with a trunk circumference of 455 centimetres and a crown width of 20 metres. It too has been protected since 1974.

Culture and History

The settlement history of Rabčice dates back to before 1612. In that year, Juraj Turzo acknowledged Jakub Ramža’s achievements and hardships in founding the municipality. Cultural traditions are preserved, among others, by the Rabčičanka folklore group. It was founded in 1973 to revive the customs of Rabčice and Goral songs.

Another cultural institution is the Kašunka children’s folklore ensemble, founded in 1982. The children were taught the declining Goral idiom word by word.

Winter and Cycling

In 2007, Rabčice established the tradition of the Gorálová bežka cross-country skiing event. The event is organised during the winter months of January or February, depending on the weather. The Gorálová bežka route was approximately 20 kilometres long and led through the cadastral area of Rabčice.

A 4.2-kilometre section of a cross-border cycle route was built in Rabčice. The cycle route runs along existing roads as well as through forest and grassland areas. Rabčice also has a tourist and cycling map combining local orientation for both activities.

Cuisine

At Salaš u Štefana, visitors can make their own Oštiepok. Together with the hosts, they can also bake Moskôľ and prepare it with cracklings, Brimsen or blueberry jam. Salaš u Štefana is located at the upper end of Rabčice, 4 kilometres from the entrance to the village.
