Sklené – Hotels, Renaissance Church and Trails in the Žiar Mountains

Sklené lies at the southern tip of Turčianska záhradka, at the eastern foothills of the Žiar Mountains. The village combines a clearly defined geographical setting with a rich history told through Renaissance buildings, memorial sites and its former glassmaking tradition. There are also marked trails leading to mountain destinations, meadows and a mountain hut.

Landscape

The municipal area of Sklené lies between 511 and 892 metres above sea level. Near the church stands a winter lime tree about 400 years old. The tree is around 20 metres high and has a trunk circumference of 635 centimetres. The settlement pattern is also part of the village’s character: Sklené features chain-like colonisation development.

Culture

In the village centre stands the Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The Renaissance building was constructed in 1626–1627 on the foundations of an older Gothic structure; inside is a Renaissance hall. The church was declared a national cultural monument in 1963. The cemetery around the church contains cast-iron crosses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The former judge’s house is also part of the historic building stock. It was originally a Renaissance building from the early 17th century and was rebuilt after 1912. A memorial unveiled there in 1994 commemorates the site of the Sklené massacre.

Another historical trace leads to Biely potok. Remains of the first glass-melting furnaces have been preserved there; a glass-melting furnace still stands at this site today. Glass was produced in Sklené until 25 June 1875.

Things to do

Sklené railway station lies on the single-track, non-electrified Horná Štubňa–Prievidza railway line. For hiking, the Ráztočno–Sklené pri Handlovej route is marked blue in the regional hiking trail list and is 9 kilometres long.

A cycle route also leads into the municipality: the Remäta–Sklené route passes the Horský hotel Remata recreation centre and then continues over pastures along the ridge to Sklené. Experienced hikers can reach Bralová skala from Sklené via forest and mountain trails. In addition, a red-marked hiking trail leads from Sklené to this rocky destination; the well-known Cesta hrdinov SNP runs there.

The Útulňa SNP Sklené lies directly on the red-marked Cesta hrdinov SNP trail. From Sklené, it can be reached via trails marked blue first and then red; the route is 5.3 kilometres long and takes approximately 1.5 hours. Another blue-marked hiking trail leads from Sklené to the Sklenianske lúky meadows.
