The founding of the settlement of Vitanová dates back to 1552. At that time, a new settlement and a Šoltýstvo were established on a cleared area called “paszeky Vitanova”.

History and Culture

One of the defining historical details in Vitanová is the column of Saint Roch, created in 1770. This folk stone carving in the rustic Baroque style is also a national cultural monument.

The grave cross at the grave of the former village judge Vojtašák in Vitanová’s lower cemetery dates from 1851. It bears reliefs of Saint Martin, Saint Andrew and an unknown saint.

The Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Vitanová was ceremonially opened in 1932. Its altars were made by the master Dlugopolský from Trenčín. A surviving log house in Vitanová is made of massive beams, retains its original openings and has a wooden portal with a round-arched entrance.

The Vitanovská heligónka is among the cultural and sporting events considered significant in Vitanová.

Nature

The Oravica flows through Vitanová and is a tributary of the Orava. It is part of the Ramsar site “Rieka Orava a jej prítoky”. Dippers, kingfishers and otters are associated with its watercourse.

In the southern part of the cadastral territory of Vitanová, in Tichá dolina, lies an area of Tatranský národný park with the third level of area protection. The national nature reserve NPR Osobitá, with the fifth level of area protection, is also located in the part of the cadastral territory of Vitanová belonging to Tatranský národný park.

Juráňova dolina lies south of Vitanová at the confluence of the Bobrovecký potok and the Oravica and is considered an easy walk through a gorge with beautiful views. In Oravice, 8 kilometres from Vitanová, there are thermal baths open year-round.

Hiking, Cycling and Winter Sports

Vitanová and its surroundings offer opportunities for hiking in nature, including hiking trails near Oravice. In the built-up area of Vitanová, cycle paths are planned along existing local roads towards neighbouring municipalities and the Oravice recreation zone. Outside the built-up area, they continue along existing field roads as two-way routes.

The Vitanová–Vrchdolinka chairlift is 965 metres long, overcomes an elevation difference of 243 metres and has a capacity of 2,400 people per hour. The ski slopes of Ski Vitanová cover 4.25 kilometres.
