Podbiel is a place where traditional folk architecture, archaeological traces, technical monuments and striking limestone landscapes come together. The main destinations range from the communally arranged courtyards of Bobrova raľa to the viewpoints and historic sites around Biela skala and Červená skala.

Culture and History

Bobrova raľa is a folk architecture monument reserve where traditional development with farmyards characteristic of central Orava has been preserved. The site is arranged around open communal courtyards. The farm buildings are located behind the houses, while the barns enclose the courtyards in an L-shaped arrangement. The outdoor areas of Bobrova raľa are accessible from the public space and can be visited individually at any time of day. The interiors are not accessible because of private ownership.

The Small Ethnographic Museum in Podbiel is located in a renovated former building of the church school No. 194. It displays objects that were formerly used in Podbiel households, during agricultural work and in the liturgy. The museum also provides information about archaeological finds at Biela skala, the former Zuberec–Podbiel narrow-gauge railway and the industrial history of Podbiel.

At Biela skala there is Hallstatt-period burial pottery and an archaeological site with 43 urn graves. The landscape itself is also part of the local character: Biela skala reaches a height of 750 m and, in good visibility, allows visitors to see across the mountains of Orava with the aid of a telescope.

Landscape and Nature

A species-rich mountain flora grows on the plateau below the summit of Biela skala. Červená skala is used for easy walks and offers the best view of Podbiel; the Roháče can also be seen in the distance. The rock is part of the Carpathian Klippen Belt and consists of limestone that formed as deep-sea sediment during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods 195 to 65 million years ago. Fossilized imprints of ammonites can still be found near the information board below Červená skala.

Technical Monument

Františkova huta near Podbiel in Orava is a national cultural monument and is one of the most valuable technical monuments in Orava. The ruins preserve the remains of a factory hall, a blast furnace and several installations, including a hammer mill, inlet and outlet channels, and a blower chamber. Františkova huta is located 2 km from the centre of Podbiel. A visit can be combined with a walk; the site can also be reached by bus.

Cycling Routes

For experienced cyclists, the blue circular route Podbiel–Zuberec–Oravice–Trstená–Podbiel begins in Podbiel at the junction with the road to the Roháče. It is 52 km long. The challenging, red-marked cycling route through the Roháčska Valley also starts at the same junction; its length is 27.5 km. Both routes therefore have a clearly designated starting point in Podbiel, but differ in their marking, course and length.
