Červený Hrádok: Wine Route, Culture and Regional History

Červený Hrádok lies in hilly terrain near the valley of the Širočina stream. The village belongs to Upper Požitavie and lies in one of the northernmost foothills of the Danubian Lowland. Between vineyards, sacred buildings, archaeological traces and regional trails, a multifaceted picture emerges, closely bringing together the natural landscape and the history of the village.

Culture

An important building in the village is St George’s Church. It is a single-nave, neoclassical building; its tower is integrated into the main structure. The church’s furnishings include Secession-style elements dating from the time of its construction. Its interior also contains two folk pilgrimage crosses from the second half of the 19th century.

Further religious and cultural-historical monuments are spread throughout Červený Hrádok. A statue of the Most Holy Trinity stands in the centre. A chapel dedicated to St Urban is located among the vineyards. Unusual gravestones depicting saints stand out in the cemetery. One of the village’s wayside landmarks is a masonry shrine containing a wooden sculpture of St Vendelin from the second half of the 19th century. Another wayside statue depicts the tormented Christ; this folk work dates from the Classical period and is dated to 1835.

History and Archaeology

The history of Červený Hrádok extends far beyond its visible buildings. Archaeological finds in the Kopanice area include ceramic material and chipped-stone artefacts. In 1970, a settlement of the people of the Fluted Pottery culture was also archaeologically examined there.

A distinctive historical trace is formed by the underground passages known as the Lochy. During the Turkish raid of 1599, the inhabitants hid in them. The passages connected houses and streets, forming an underground structure within the village.

Wine and Village Life

Vineyards in Červený Hrádok are documented as early as 1715 and 1720. Today, characteristic small wine-cellar houses shape the appearance of the village. Červený Hrádok is also part of the educational trail along the wine route of the microregion. The connection between the vineyards, cellars and educational trail remains closely linked to local tradition.

Regional traditions are also evident at cultural and commemorative events: the inhabitants of Červený Hrádok wear various traditional costumes. A church fair is usually held in the village on the feast day of St George. The village’s historical record also includes a brewery that existed in Červený Hrádok in 1714.

Landscape and Trails

The Mlyňany Arboretum, founded in 1892, is located near Červený Hrádok. Its park now covers 67 hectares. The arboretum is open year-round. In addition to the hilly terrain and the valley of the Širočina stream, this provides a permanently accessible botanical site in the vicinity of the village.

For exercise within the village, Červený Hrádok has a fitness park. The Požitavie–Širočina cycle route also passes through the cadastral area of Červený Hrádok. The route is therefore part of the regional trail infrastructure, just like the educational trail along the wine route of the microregion.
