Culture

St. Andrew’s Church was originally a Gothic church from the 14th century. Its main altar is late Baroque and dates from 1740. In the Zamagurie region, it is the only church oriented towards the west. Outside the church, too, you will encounter different architectural forms and periods. The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Neoclassical chapel from the first half of the 19th century. It stands on the southern edge of the municipality in the cemetery next to the main road.

The Chapel of Saint Barbara has stood on the site of an older wooden chapel since 1803. It has three altars: one dedicated to Saint Barbara, one to the Virgin Mary and one to Saint Adalbert. The manor house of Spišské Hanušovce is also a Neoclassical building from the first half of the 19th century. A tympanum is located on the central avant-corps of the main façade. After its renovation in 2008, the manor house has been used as a hotel.

Nature

The cadastral area of Spišské Hanušovce lies in the protected zone of Pieniny National Park; the second level of nature protection applies there. Along the Rieka stretches a river valley formed by the erosion caused by this river. The local geology consists mainly of flysch from the Central Carpathian Paleogene, which is composed predominantly of sandstone and claystone. Thus, both the geological basis and the landscape form of the area are clearly identified.

Routes

Road II/542 runs through Spišské Hanušovce and connects Spišská Stará Ves with Spišská Belá. Bus routes connect Spišské Hanušovce with Kežmarok, Spišská Stará Ves and Osturňa. The road and bus connections are therefore among the explicitly mentioned transport links of the town.

Activities

At the western edge of the municipality, below Bufarek Hill, there is a small ski resort with two downhill runs. The ski resort has a 160-metre beginner’s slope and a 450-metre downhill run with a vertical difference of 90 metres for less demanding skiers.

The municipality’s annual calendar also includes a regular event: the Spišské Hanušovce Municipal Days take place annually during the summer months.
