Kežmarok: Discover Cultural Monuments and Cycling Routes

The Historic Route through Kežmarok was established to guide visitors to the city’s most significant monuments.

Culture

The Drevený artikulárny kostol in Kežmarok has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The church is open to the general public; large music concerts are also held in the Drevený artikulárny kostol. The Nový evanjelický kostol is a distinctive landmark in Kežmarok due to its characteristic red colour.

The Lyceum Library has a collection of 150,000 books. These include 55 incunabula printed between 1470 and 1500. The library therefore focuses both on its extensive overall collection and on particularly early printed works.

The present form of the three-nave Basilica minor sv. Kríža was created through a Gothic reconstruction between 1444 and 1498. It has a net vault, a star vault and a cross-ribbed vault. The oldest bell in the Renaissance Zvonárka, also known as Zlatá veža, is dated to 1525.

Kežmarok Castle features a viewing tower and a permanent exhibition of historic automobiles. The Múzeum v Kežmarku presents exhibitions ranging from archaeology to art. These include an exhibition on bourgeois domestic culture and a collection of historic weapons.

The Jewish cemetery in Kežmarok has been registered as a national cultural monument since 2000. It contains 555 gravestones arranged in 25 regular rows.

Cycling

Cycle route 014 runs through the historic centre of Kežmarok, past the castle and onwards towards Zlatná. Another connection is the cycle path between Kežmarok and Vrbov: the section is 4.5 km long, paved and marked in green. It is suitable for mountain bikes and road bikes.
