Busovce – Manor House, Churches and River Landscape

Bušovce lies at the confluence of the Poprad River and its left-bank tributary, the Biela. At the same time, the village is situated on the main road from Spišská Belá (4 km) to Podolínec (6 km). This brings together a distinctive location on two bodies of water and a clear, easily understood connection between neighboring places.

Culture

At the eastern edge of the historic center stands the manor house in Bušovce, a late Baroque, single-storey, three-winged building from the late 18th century. The manor house is a cultural monument comprising a residential building and farm buildings. The historic center of Bušovce follows a historically developed, lens-shaped urban layout that gives the village center a clearly recognizable spatial form.

The historic religious buildings include the Roman Catholic Church of St. Lawrence the Deacon in Bušovce. It dates from the first half of the 14th century. It contains an original Gothic stone baptismal font from the 14th century; the church also has three late Gothic wooden sculptures from the period after 1520, which are closely associated with the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča.

The evangelical church in Bušovce was built in 1818 in the eclectic style. It has a historicist interior from the late 19th century, including a folk-carved baptismal font from the 19th century. It is currently used for services once a year.

History

South of Bušovce lies Dvorské pole, an archaeological site with evidence from the Paleolithic, the Bronze Age, the Roman period, the Middle Ages, and the modern era. Medzi lesmi is another archaeological site with a medieval and modern-era settlement. Both places connect the history of Bušovce with different periods and settlement phases.

Traditional Spiš bobbin lace is also part of the village’s regional heritage: it was produced in the area around Levoča, Lomnička, and Bušovce and was already known in the 17th century. The historic Polish Gate stood where the Biela flows into the Poprad, near present-day Bušovce.

Nature

The waterways define several precisely delimited areas. The Poprad No. 5 grayling fishing section extends from the mouth of the Biela in Bušovce to the mouth of the Čierny potok in Spišská Belá–Strážky. Biela No. 1 is a fishable trout section extending from its mouth in Bušovce to the boundary of TANAP.

The cadastral area of Bušovce also contains the regionally significant biocorridor of the Poprad River. Together with the confluence of the Poprad and Biela, this corridor forms the nature-related part of the village’s characteristics, while the two fishing sections retain their respective boundaries and names.
