Ajdovščina: Roman History and Nature at the Hubelj
Ajdovščina makes Roman history visible in a preserved structure: the Roman fortress of Castra preserves an almost completely intact Roman city wall with fourteen towers.
Culture
Construction of the Roman fortress of Castra began around the year 270 as part of the defence system on the eastern border of the Roman Empire. The Pilonova Gallery Ajdovščina is both a museum and an exhibition venue for contemporary visual art. Its permanent collection of works by Veno Pilon includes drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs, as well as documentary materials and personal belongings; a reconstructed studio of the artist is also on display.
The Ajdovščina Museum Collection presents the permanent archaeological exhibition “Fluvio frigido – Castra – Flovius – Ajdovščina”, which traces the development of Ajdovščina from prehistory to the Early Middle Ages. The collection also includes a permanent fossil collection with around 1,200 fossils from all over Slovenia, including extremely rare specimens and some fossils that were first discovered anywhere in the world. Archaeological excavations are displayed in a square in Ajdovščina, including a reconstructed Roman tower.
Nature
The nature trail along the Hubelj River is a 3,100-metre circular route. It begins at Pale Sports Park and runs immediately outside the town of Ajdovščina. Its 24 stations provide information about the geological bedrock and soil of the Vipava Valley, the diverse flora and fauna along the Hubelj, the rocks and aquatic ecosystem, as well as the dry Školj karst meadow.
At the source of the Hubelj River, waterfalls can form after heavy rainfall, when water emerges from numerous karst fissures and plunges into the riverbed. The route length and the number of stations can be considered separately when planning the day: one describes the extent, while the other describes the thematic structure of the circular route.
Activities
The “Secrets of the Roman Fortress Castra” experience offers an informative and entertaining guided tour through the old town of Ajdovščina. Ajdovščina Airport is operated by the Josip Križaj Aeroclub and is intended for sport and business aviation.
The runways at Ajdovščina Airport can be used by gliders, powered aircraft, ultralight aircraft, motorised hang gliders, balloons, helicopters, paragliders and model aircraft. A guided tour and the possible uses of the airport belong to different types of activities; this distinction can help with planning the day.
Events
The first connection between Ajdovščina and Predmeja operates from 25 June to 13 September on Thursdays and Sundays. At the “Pašta fešta” festival in Ajdovščina, various traditional and modern pasta dishes could be sampled on 23 May 2026.
