Hotel in Gradišče pri Vipavi: Church, Wine and Climbing Trails

Gradišče pri Vipavi combines cultural history, winemaking tradition and distinctive trails through the Vipava Valley landscape. Fourteen chapels depicting the Stations of the Cross lead to the Church of the Holy Cross; at the same time, the village is one of the starting points for a hike to Nanos.

Culture and History

The Church of the Holy Cross stands in the centre of Gradišče pri Vipavi, on a hill northeast of Vipava. It is surrounded by the wall of a former cemetery. The chapels of the Stations of the Cross were built between 1877 and 1881 and give the approach to the church its historic character. At Zatrep, above Gradišče pri Vipavi, there is also a prehistoric settlement from the Hallstatt period.

The art history route “Po poteh umetnostne zgodovine” includes a visit to Gradišče pri Vipavi and its chapels of the Stations of the Cross. Advance registration is required for the guided tour, which is conducted by local guides.

Hiking and Climbing

A hike to Nanos can begin in Gradišče pri Vipavi. The ascent to the summit of Plaz takes about an hour; from the summit, there is a sweeping view over the Vipava Valley.

The Gradiška Tura (Ferata)–Abram route also leads to Gradiška Tura. Its steep ascent is secured with 77 iron staples and 120 metres of steel cable. The starting point is by a large car park at Kamp Tura, above Gradišče pri Vipavi. The route to Gradiška Tura is described as the most challenging and exciting climbing route in the Vipava Valley.

The rock walls of Gradiška Tura contain a free-climbing area with 196 climbing routes. Below the natural climbing wall lies Tura Campsite, in a Natura 2000 area near Gradišče pri Vipavi.

Wine and Regional Cuisine

Vina Poljšak offers guided wine tastings for individuals and groups of up to 30 people. The offer includes a cellar tour and, on request, a tour of the vineyards. The Poljšak family estate in Gradišče pri Vipavi has been growing grapevines for more than two centuries.

Another seasonal combination of wine and regional food is Osmica Ferjančič. It takes place twice a year, usually in November around St Martin’s Day and in spring, in April or May. The offerings include homemade wine, apple juice and natural mineral water, as well as homemade sausages and cured ham, homemade cheese in olive oil and home-baked bread. They are complemented by a regional stew, a farmer’s platter, walnut štruklji and apple strudel.

Sports and Leisure

The Tura Sports and Recreation Centre offers two tennis courts with artificial turf, a four-lane bocce court, a beach volleyball court, a basketball court, a handball court and a small-sided football pitch. The complex also includes children’s playgrounds and an artificial climbing wall. This 10 × 5 metre artificial climbing wall is available at the Tura Sports Centre for learning and training.
