Iga Vas – Landscape, Cultural Heritage and Hiking in the Loška Dolina

Iga Vas is located in the southern part of the Loška Dolina on the Stari trg–Babno Polje road. The settlement is a larger, more recent roadside village on an insignificant elevation. The landscape, local history and marked trails shape the different aspects of Iga Vas.

Nature

Near Iga Vas, the Obrh occasionally floods the meadows. Alongside the Obrh are damp, frequently flooded meadows, while the fields are situated on higher ground. The Križna Jama cave is located in the vicinity of Iga Vas. Mount Leskov Vrh is nearby; the Županšček and Bička Gora mountains are located in the surroundings of Iga Vas. The Hošperk Castle ruins are located in the wider regional area.

Culture and History

Gostilna Magušar and the house at Iga vas 22 are listed as built cultural heritage. In Iga Vas, Gostilna Magušar was a long-established coachmen’s inn and is now known as “Pri Magušarju”. A stone portal above the entrance identifies Gregor Mlakar as the owner of the inn in the 19th century; the inscription reads “GM 1842”. Thus, a single building preserves both its former function as a coachmen’s inn and the historical owner’s name with a year.

Hiking

The “Pohod po Loški dolini” route runs mostly along the “Pot dediščine Loške doline” and follows its yellow-green markings. The shorter variant is 11 km long and branches off from the longer route before the hamlet of Siga. For Sunday, 12 October 2025, the “Pohod po Loški dolini” was described as a circular hike along the edge of the Loško polje. In this description, the route was characterized as flat and not very demanding.
