Bukovo: Hotel, St. Leonard’s Church and Cycling Trails

The history of Bukovo begins with St. Leonard’s Church: it is one of the oldest churches in the Cerkno area and is believed to have already existed in 1594. In addition, listed heritage, a cemetery monument, and specific routes represent distinct elements of the village.

Culture and history

St. Leonard’s Church features a main altar with a new statue of St. Leonard. The original statue of St. Leonard from the former wooden church is located in a chapel behind the old parish house. This chapel was restored in 2002 and decorated with new frescoes. Sacred history is therefore reflected here both in the church’s present furnishings and in the preserved figure from the former building.

The Gomilnica archaeological heritage area is listed in Bukovo under EŠD number 23327. The chapel of Bukovo is listed as built heritage under EŠD number 21001. The hamlet of Krtečne is listed as settlement heritage under EŠD number 16275, while the NOB monument in Bukovo is listed as memorial heritage under EŠD number 21002. The entries therefore cover different forms of local heritage, from the archaeological site to settlement and memorial heritage.

The Bukovo monument is located in the cemetery next to the church in Bukovo. It is a stone obelisk with name plaques attached to the cemetery wall. Centuries-old lime trees stand on the church hill at the edge of Bukovo. The area below the church remains a popular meeting place for residents of Bukovo and Zakojca.

Routes and landscape

From the direction of Cerkno, the shorter and steeper access route to Zakojca leads from Reka through Bukovo. Two named routes with different courses are documented for cyclists: Cycling Trail No. 7 runs through Bukovo to the junction for Zakojca and Grahovo. Cycling Trail No. 2 runs for approximately 9 kilometres through Bukovo, Kojca, and Jesenica.

Trail No. 7 also includes a long, winding, and steep climb to the dispersed settlement of Bukovski vrh. The return route from Kojca leads across meadows and through the forest to the Jesenica–Bukovo main road. Thus, in addition to the destinations, the character and course of these routes are also described specifically.
