Lome: Karst Forest, Cultural Heritage and Hotels in Slovenia

Lome in Slovenia is connected with the Karst Forest Educational Trail as well as with places and life stories from Lome and the surrounding settlements. The Karst Forest Educational Trail leads through forest and karst landscapes, while houses, memorials and biographies commemorate figures from Lome and the surrounding settlements. In addition, Javornik offers an observation tower, ski resort and trails that enable different forms of exploration.

Nature

The Karst Forest Educational Trail begins at the Zgornje Lome/Spodnje Lome intersection and is laid out as an easy circular route. Numerous dolines are visible along the path. Fossilized remains of rudist shells can also be seen in Lower Cretaceous limestone. The trail leads through an autochthonous fir-beech forest and reaches Hrvat Cave after approximately 300 meters along the forest section. There is also a limestone pavement on the trail near Spodnje Lome.

The route is not limited to a single mode of transport: The Karst Forest Educational Trail can be cycled, extended to the High Karst Trail and connected with the Matuckar Trail in Zadlog.

Geographical setting

In the vicinity of Lome, an observation tower stands on Javornik, offering views above the treetops of the Dolomites, the Carnic and Julian Alps, the Karawanks, the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and Snežnik. The view thus extends across several named mountain regions and complements the Educational Trail's immediate karst and forest themes with a broad panorama.

From Ljubljana, the Karst Forest Educational Trail can be reached via the exit to Lome. The route then follows a side road for approximately 500 meters to the Spodnje Lome/Zgornje Lome intersection. The circular trail begins there as well.

Culture and history

The local cultural history includes the Domačija Tominc in Lome, which is part of the built cultural heritage. Matej Cigale was also born in Lome. In 1860, he edited an extensive German–Slovenian dictionary and in 1880 compiled a German–Slovenian terminological dictionary. A memorial plaque for Matej Cigale was placed on his parents' house in the nearby Dolnji Lomeh in 1894.

Another historical connection leads to Matej Tominc: He was born on September 7, 1790, in Lomeh near Črni Vrh nad Idrijo and was a pioneer of tourism in the Škocjan Caves. A beehive is also attributed to the beekeeper Frančiška Tominc at Lome 8 in Pri Kašc. These individual places and life stories connect Lome with the history of education, crafts and tourism without having to be combined into a single attraction.

Winter on Javornik

Winter sports are also connected with Lome and Javornik. The contact address of the Javornik Ski Center is Lome 10, Slovenia. The Javornik ski school offers private lessons and courses. At the same time, the Javornik ski resort is currently out of operation; its ski slopes are suitable for beginners and very advanced skiers. Both details belong together: The terrain is described according to the stated difficulty levels, but its current operating status remains unchanged.

The 26th night march to Javornik was planned for January 31, 2026. It was to lead from Črni Vrh via Gromov grič in Gornje Lome to the Pirnatova mountain hut on Javornik. This connects a time-specific hiking event with a clearly named route across several places.
