Rakitna: Lake, Hiking Trails and Hotels

The picturesque Lake Rakitna is a popular destination for day trips and also a starting point for walks and hikes in the surrounding area. The Rakitna Forest and Archaeological Learning Trail offers a specific combination of landscape and culture. At the start, there is a 64-metre-long replica of a ship's mast and a map showing the locations of 22 other information boards. From there, the path leads towards the former site of the Roman wall known as Claustra Alpium Iuliarum.

There is a gravel parking area at Lake Rakitna. The village of Rakitna is also the starting point for several longer hiking and cycling routes. History and Culture

The history of the Rakitna Mast dates back to December 1893. At that time, a huge fir tree was felled in the forest of Janez Opeka below the Selan farmstead to serve as the mast of a damaged ship in Trieste. The Rakitna Mast Trail runs through Rakitna from Selan to Vrnilce.

The Learning Trail also commemorates this event with a replica: at the start of the trail stands a 64-metre-long replica of a ship's mast. The church in Rakitna has two side chapels and two marble altars. The church also has a handmade nativity scene made from tree roots, which attracts many visitors during the Christmas season.
