Škofljica: Nature, Culture and Hotels

Škofljica lies on the southeastern edge of the Ljubljansko Barje marshland. The surrounding area combines marsh landscapes, signposted trails, historic buildings and church art with concrete opportunities for walks and longer hikes.

Culture

Among the sights that can be visited in Škofljica is Lisičje Castle. Because of its cultural, art-historical and architectural, historical and landscape values, it has been designated a cultural monument of local importance. The castle was built in the mid-16th century and acquired its present appearance at the end of the 18th century. Various cultural events are held at Lisičje Manor; it is also used for weddings.

The religious buildings also preserve remarkable works of art. The Gothic Church of Saint Ursula is known for its late Gothic frescoes. These include the oldest fresco featuring a motif of the Slovenian landscape. The Church of Saints Simon and Jude contains frescoes by the prominent painter Janez Ljubljanski.

The “Pohod v modrem” combines physical activity and culture. This hike includes visits to a blooming flax field, the Church of Saint Ursula and Lisičje Manor, as well as a tasting of flax potica.

Nature

Čutil Park is a themed leisure and recreation park in Škofljica. It represents marsh biotopes and supports learning about the municipality’s natural environment. The park also includes a biotope for birds and ducks. The Koliščarska Trail in Čutil Park consists of walking paths and benches for resting.

The forest educational trail begins at the memorial to the victims of fascist violence in Drglerija, after driving from Škofljica Primary School in the direction of Zalog. It provides information about typical tree species and life in the forest. The Pijavška Marsh Trail passes typical marsh plants and animals, as well as a drinking-water intake. Some of the signs along the trail describe the historical and cultural heritage.

Trails

Several trails reveal the diverse landscape and cultural aspects around Škofljica in their own distinct ways. The Svarunova Trail has 33 information boards and telephone information about natural, cultural and historical attractions. It is 23 km long and requires approximately five hours of moderate walking.

The Pijavška Marsh Trail is 8 km long and takes approximately two to three hours at a moderate walking pace. The Čemšeniška Castle Trail is marked with green-and-yellow signs and information boards; it is 12 km long and takes approximately three to four hours at a moderate walking pace. There are several hiking trails and several cycling routes in the Škofljica area.

An organised Svarunova Trail hiking day has traditionally been held for 24 years on 25 June, Slovenian Statehood Day.

Location

Škofljica lies on the Ljubljana–Kočevje road and the Ljubljana–Grosuplje–Metlika railway line. The Pijavška Marsh Trail can be reached by bus via Škofljica and then by a connection to Pijava Gorica. These transport links and the various trail lengths complement the town’s natural and cultural destinations.
