Hotel in Kamnica: Culture and Nature on the Drava

Kamnica lies on the left bank of the Drava, where vineyards meet the rolling Kozjak hills. The combination of river landscape, viticulture, and hilly surroundings defines the area as much as its historical landmarks. Kamnica is mentioned in written sources from 1093 in connection with the Kamniški potok (torrentem Gêmnitz).

Culture and History

St. Martin’s Church in Kamnica is first mentioned toward the end of the 11th century and stands on a slight rise in the middle of the settlement of Kamnica. During renovations that began in 1743, it was completely Baroque in style; Gothic architectural elements are still visible on the exterior. Its furnishings include Baroque wall paintings by Georg Raffa and Anton Lerchinger, as well as Baroque altars, a pulpit, and an oratory by Jožef Holzinger.

The parish house also preserves a Baroque fresco depicting a bagpipe player. Its construction phases are dated to 1696, 1818, and 1829.

Nature

Mariborski otok is a natural island in the Drava, the largest river island in Slovenia and the only island in the country that is not typically covered with gravel. The nature of Mariborski otok is protected by local and numerous national regulations. A nature trail runs along the edge of the island. There is also a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, which operates in summer and has been declared a cultural monument.

A path along the Kamniški potok leads to its confluence with the Drava. Just before this confluence lies Babja kopel, a pool with rapids.

Paths and Experiences

Sveti Urban is a popular hiking destination with a winemaking tradition and the Church of St. Urban. Several paths lead up the hill, including the “Trim pot” and the path via Medič; there is also a view of Maribor. A paved road leads to Sveti Urban, allowing easy access by car and making it well suited for cyclists.

Huzarjev skok on the Kamniški potok can be reached on foot or by bicycle. Above Kamnica, a short path leads to mysterious rock formations in the forest. The path is also suitable for children and offers a beautiful view of the Drava.

At Hipodrom Kamnica, members of the public can rent horses for riding or to learn riding skills.

Local

At Kamnica’s Open Cellars Day, visitors can visit nine winemakers for a fee covering the glass and taste at least three wines.
