Pernica: Lake, Birdlife and Trails

Pernica reveals its natural character at Lake Perniško: the body of water lies directly beside the town centre and is an important biotope for waterbirds.

Nature

The artificial lakes Pernica I and II cover a total of approximately 90 ha and extend between the settlements of Vosek and Vukovje. Lake Perniško is also a resting place for several rare migratory birds. The path along Lake Perniško runs between the upper and lower ponds. It is 4 km long, takes about 90 minutes with stops, and is suitable for everyone.

The path around Lake Perniško offers the opportunity to observe waterbirds and birds in waterside areas. There is a clear distinction regarding use of the lake: Lake Perniško is suitable for fishing, but not for swimming.

Trails

The Pernica–Jakobska cycling route begins in Pernica at the chestnut tree near Gostilna Kramberger. It is 33 km long and generally less demanding. This provides, in addition to the path by the lake, a longer cycling route with its own starting point in the town.

The Pernica hiking route begins at the Cooperative House in the centre of Pernica and offers three variants. It is 25 km long and can be completed in about eight hours. Due to its varied terrain, the Pernica hiking route is suitable for recreational athletes. Horse riding is offered along the Pernica hiking route by KK “Zlata horda”.

The hiking route also includes the Šušteršičeva domačija, which it passes. This is a well-known vineyard workers’ house with a thatched roof. The route thus connects its course with a specific example of rural architectural heritage.

Culture

The Church of Saint Margaret in Pernica was first mentioned in 1361. The present church building dates from 1567. The bell tower was built in 1670; two fragments of ancient gravestones are set into its wall.

At the Protner farm, visitors can see a herd of fallow deer. The Protner farm also offers meat from Zaseka, deer salami, cooked sausage and gibanica.
