Šmihel nad Mozirjem: Cultural Heritage, St. Michael’s Church and the Šmihelska pot

Šmihel nad Mozirjem has the status of a cultural heritage settlement monument. As a protected settlement monument, the village preserves its original settlement structure: the road network, parcel structure, loosely arranged buildings along the roads, and public and private open spaces are all part of it. The area encompassing Golte, Radegunda, Šmihel nad Mozirjem and Lepa Njiva is also characterized by an autochthonous dispersed settlement pattern with isolated farms and small hamlets, particularly on the slopes.

Culture

The Slovenian poet, writer and translator Vladimir Levstik (1886–1957) was born in Šmihel nad Mozirjem on January 18, 1886. The memorial plaque on Vladimir Levstik’s birthplace was installed in 1980. A fresco and a cross can be found on the Goličnik house at Šmihel 12.

You can explore the history of the village on several levels: through its organically developed settlement pattern, through the biography of an influential individual, and through individual architectural details. These different perspectives keep the cultural connections clearly distinguishable from one another.

In the center of the village, a walled church stands on elevated ground. The foundation stone of St. Michael’s Church was laid on May 12, 1602; the chancel was built in 1604, and the church was consecrated on December 16, 1631. Ivan Fantoni painted the interior of the church in 1903.

The biographical trail and the building history thus offer two separate chronological approaches. You can place the dates in context individually and distinguish between personal literary history and ecclesiastical architecture.
