Dobrovo is the centre of the Brda wine-growing region. In the town and its immediate surroundings, castle culture, regional events, wine experiences and paths through the villages of Brda come together to create a diverse destination for eventful days.

Culture and History

Dobrovo Castle is an important venue for the local cultural offering. Its Renaissance building was erected at the beginning of the 17th century on the site of a 13th-century castle. The castle houses the “LANDSCAPES OF BODIES” exhibition featuring graphic works by Zoran Mušič. An experience of the Kožbanjšček Gorge using a VR headset is also offered there.

The castle complex includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. It is decorated with original and reproduced Gothic frescoes from northern Primorska. Different forms of cultural experience therefore coexist in the same historic building: Renaissance architecture, sacred art, graphic works and a digital depiction of the Kožbanjšček Gorge.

The traditional “Cherry Festival” also takes place in Dobrovo every June. The 60th anniversary edition of the “Praznik češenj” on 6 and 7 June at Dobrovo Castle includes a traditional ethnographic wagon procession as well as stalls offering local specialities and handmade handicraft products. The event thus combines a festive occasion with regional craft and food culture.

Nature and Trails

The Brda Hiking Trail – Črnica starts in front of Dobrovo Castle and ends in Dobrovo. Its route connects the area in front of the castle with the town itself. From Dobrovo, the villages in Brda can also be reached by car, motorcycle, bicycle or on foot. These different means of transport are explicitly mentioned for the routes between Dobrovo and the villages.

Wine

The Brda wine-growing region also shapes the offerings of Klet Brda. Various wine tastings are offered in the tasting room, and guided tours of the wine cellar are conducted. A visit to the wine cellar is also part of the visitor offering at Klet Brda. The information distinguishes between the tastings in the designated room, the guided tours and the visit to the wine cellar as a separate part of the offering.

Klet Brda also has a 60-minute escape room for groups of four to six people. Advance booking is required for this offering. A clearly time-limited group activity thus complements the wine tastings and the wine cellar visit without replacing their character.
