Nature and trails

Zaloški bajer is a remnant of the Vipava’s old riverbed and is one of the best-preserved backwaters along the river. Formed by the Vipava, this backwater provides a refuge for numerous animal and plant species.

The Pot med vinogradi trail begins at the Zalošče bus stop. The easy, marked route runs through vineyards as well as olive and peach orchards in Zalošče. It is 5.7 km long and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes on foot. The markings, distance and approximate walking time provide clear reference points for incorporating this activity into your own daily itinerary. The starting point, markings, length and approximate duration describe the route from four different perspectives: they indicate where to begin, how to find your way along the route, its extent and the time required. This allows the information to be read separately from the wine and remembrance sites.

At Zaloščan Vina de Adami, all generations of the Slejk family uphold the winemaking and cellar tradition of the Vipava Valley. The estate cultivates 8 hectares of vineyards according to traditional methods, without the use of herbicides. By arrangement, Zaloščan Vina de Adami offers a standard wine tasting featuring five wines, along with a snack of homemade cheese and olive oil.

The Saxida winery is part of the Krog Umetnosti-Art Circle project, which connects art and wine in the Vipava Valley and Brda. At Saxida, authentic seasonal dishes with a distinctly local character are prepared; with advance booking, Saxida also offers a six-course tasting menu.

The Gregorič tourist farm produces homemade white Cuvée wines and red varietal wines. Its wines are sold in bulk or in bottles; wine with personalized labels is also available for purchase.

Culture and remembrance

The Austro-Hungarian Zalošče I military cemetery lies near the filial church of St. Lawrence in Zalošče. A central monument there commemorates the fallen soldiers of the 22nd Regiment, whose recruitment district was in Chernivtsi (Czernowitz) in the former Bukovina, in what is now Ukraine.

This cemetery can be reached from the road leading from Dornberk to Zalošče: after crossing the Vipava bridge, turn right at the first junction in Zalošče. The Austro-Hungarian Zalošče II military cemetery can be reached from the edge of the village via a gravel and cart track through the vineyards.

According to Italian authorities, 120 soldiers are buried at the Austro-Hungarian Zalošče II military cemetery. In the church in Zalošče, a tombstone set into the church wall commemorates the person buried there.
