Kostanjevica na Krasu between Kal Kalič and Karst history

A small pond east of Kostanjevica na Krasu, historic paths and distinctive reminders of the past shape the available views of the area. Kal Kalič is a watering place for deer, wild boar, birds, butterflies, bees and other animals, combining nature observation with a short walk through the surrounding area.

Nature and paths

A 1 km walk to Kal Kalič begins in the village centre at the Kržada and leads past the primary school. This walk is part of the themed trail series “Med kali in štirnami do duše Krasa”, which includes the 1 km route from Kostanjevica na Krasu to Kal Kalič. A cycling route also begins at the village square in the centre of Kostanjevica na Krasu. Local cave guides also offer guided hikes along the Paths of Peace.

Culture and history

The Church of St Martin in Kostanjevica na Krasu was built in 1724 and restored in 1926. The parish church of St Martin stands at the upper edge of Kostanjevica na Krasu and offers a view of the sea. The Grmača archaeological site near Kostanjevica na Krasu is a prehistoric hilltop settlement. The summit of Grmača is surrounded by prehistoric fortification walls with a circumference of approximately 550 m.

The names of two prominent Slovenian cultural figures are also associated with the village. Jože Spacal was born in Kostanjevica na Krasu in 1939 and was a painter, mosaic artist, graphic artist and, for more than three decades, a stage designer at Slovenian television. Kostanjevica na Krasu is considered the place of origin of the graphic artist Lojze Spacal. The village is likewise named as the place of origin of the writer Boris Pahor.

During the First World War, the Austro-Hungarian army operated a supply railway as far as Kostanjevica na Krasu. The walk to Kal Kalič passes the remains of a military railway from the First World War that was used to supply the front lines. During the Ninth Battle of the Isonzo in November 1916, Kostanjevica na Krasu was the easternmost point reached by the Italian army as it advanced across the Karst. Italian shells completely destroyed Kostanjevica na Krasu during the First World War.

Events

Kostanjski pust has a tradition of more than one hundred years. During Kostanjski pust, a masked ball is held on Carnival Saturday evening at the cultural centre in Kostanjevica na Krasu. Kostanjski pust concludes on Ash Wednesday with the burning and burial of Tine in Kostanjevica na Krasu.
