Plave: Walk of Peace, Churches and Soča Cycle Route

Plave is a place where history and trails can be experienced at several specific sites.

Culture and History

St. Aloysius Chapel in Plave was built in December 1916 near a military cemetery. In the following months, the interior of the chapel was decorated with murals depicting scenes from the First World War, including Italian soldiers raising the Italian tricolour on Mount Prižnica and an attack by Italian infantry across a pontoon bridge near Plave towards Prižnica. The chapel can be reached from a small gravel parking area located approximately half a kilometre from the village of Plave. This distance is only approximate.

Another historical trace is the Church of St. John the Baptist in Plave. It was built in the Neo-Romanesque architectural style. After its destruction in the First World War, it was rebuilt in the 20th century; it is said to have been built in 1866.

Remembrance and Trails

Stage 7A of the Walk of Peace begins in Plave. The starting car park for this stage is next to Plave railway station. Near Plave, section 7A of the Walk of Peace follows an old military supply road built by Italian soldiers.

Prižnica Memorial Park in the municipality of Kanal ob Soči is part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic. The circular trail through the memorial park begins directly above Plave. Remains of Austro-Hungarian trenches and fortified positions are still visible in the memorial park.

Nature and Activities

The Plave–Solkan section of the Soča Cycle Route runs along a cycle path and is suitable for families. The Plave–Nova Gorica cycle path runs directly along the emerald-green Soča at the foot of Sabotin. During the summer months, you can cool off in the Soča River along the Soča Cycle Route.
